This website is my personal portofolio. I am a designer, entrepreneur and businessman and have worked in a great many fields in both the U.S. and Indonesia.
On display here is a particular subset of my projects relating to design, marketing and business creation in Bali from 1988 through 2007.
These projects demonstrate what I feel are important relationships between creation of image, understanding of customers' wants, and rationalization of business structure to serve those wants efficiently. I feel that they demonstrate a classic case of image driven marketing.
There is nothing new here, just marketing and business organization as practiced by numerous business of all sizes ranging from mom and pop pet stores to fashion chains with thousands of outlets. In this portfolio I present basic business school principles applied to a unique tourist environment.
Although these business operate in Bali, and though I purposely created for them a mythology of "Balinese businesses", in fact there is nothing Balinese about them— they are simply standard international business models which happen to be operating in Bali and using Balinese imagery as a marketing tool.
Of the businesses profiled here, Uluwatu Boutiques and Kori Restaurant are currently doing well in Bali although no longer under my control. Other companies Gedong, Tepi Laut, and Kayun I have had to close pending resolution of personal and legal issues.
I am preparing new business plans based upon the precepts presented in this portfolio. As I present in more detail later, "tourism" as a marketing concept has quite a different meaning than "tourism" as a funtional business sector. My marketing definition of tourism is just as applicable in one's home town as it is in a recognized international tourist destination.
